James’ Story

What motivated you to run your first marathon?
I wanted to show myself that I could reach a goal, even if it seems like a huge and challenging task at first.
Why did you want to run for Childhood First?
I wanted to raise funds for Childhood First because I believe no one, especially a child, should endure such trauma. If they do, providing support is essential for their development. Childhood First is a charity that offers exceptional support for those who have experienced such hardships. I wanted to help them continue their vital work.
What was the best part about running for Childhood First?
I felt like I was part of a community, there was constant support from Clara and Alicia and with the WhatsApp group chat. We were able to ask questions if we needed and the Childhood First team were excellent. The frequent check-ins with the team were excellent and made me feel like I was part of something, and appreciation was shown to all the runners who were involved.
How did you go about your training?
I was training for a triathlon which was in August last year which gave me a good foundation of fitness. After this I focussed mainly on running with occasional swimming and cycling throughout the Winter. I was aiming to be consistent and gradually build up my distance.
How did you go about your fundraising?
Initially I sent out emails to work colleagues and friends and family and shared my link to ask for donations. We then organised a charity golf day which involved prizes and a raffle. This offered people something in return, so they were more likely to donate and get involved. I shared images on social media to promote and raise awareness for Childhood First.
What is your top tip for a successful fundraiser?
Keep bugging people and sharing your donation page. When organising a day such as the golf day, offer something in return and get to understand what the charity does. People are more likely to donate if they know they are getting something from it, or they know what their money is going towards.
What is your favourite post- run treat?
For me, I think Pizza is always a great post-run treat. But then again when is Pizza not great?
What is your go-to motivational song to keep you going?
I think Despues De La Playa by Bad Bunny. I have no idea what’s being said but when I hear it, I get that extra bit of energy to keep me going.
