Sorcha’s Story
What motivated you to fundraise for Childhood First?
My motivation for fundraising for Childhood First stems from being a mother myself, and from experiencing wonderful parents and childhood! It sounds such a simple thing to say but my childhood shaped me into the woman I am today. Without nurturing guidance, love, security, fun and discipline I was shown as a child, my life could have been very different. Childhood is so very important. We learn by example and not all children are exposed to positive behaviours. I believe childhood should be joyous. I find it heart-breaking so many kids don’t experience a loving home environment, and have to endure the opposite. Fundraising by doing something ‘nuts’ just seemed such a small gesture to raise some funds and awareness of Childhood First.
What is your top tip for a successful fundraiser?
As a fundraiser, I would say – keep it real! I’ve tried to constantly engage with my donators by telling and sharing funny stories (all true), informing them of my chosen charity’s work, statistics of childhood poverty and abuse, educating them in some way about Childhood First’s work, where they are based, where the children live, why money is needed, what the donations can purchase. I try to inject a fun element too, so I adopt a ‘rollercoaster’ technique where I undulate the tone of my posts. I don’t always ask for donations either – it is a hard time for many people and I know money is tight. I often ask for people to engage by sharing their own stories and it can build up a lovely narrative. I always include Childhood First’s name in my posts and their website details so potential donators can pop on over and have a read for themselves.
What has been the best part of fundraising for Childhood First?
The best part is watching the money roll in! And it’s not because it’s cash (although that is one of the main reasons), but rather it elucidates the empathy and compassion that donators are feeling. It also shows to me people are reading what I’m writing and might be curious enough to click onto Childhood First’s website and read the information for themselves. That way, they may decide to participate in a fundraising event themselves, or just help spread the word about Childhood First!
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I had never heard of Childhood First. I stumbled upon it by accident. What I read I found fascinating. When my children were small, I read some books about parenting which have stuck with me all these years, and when I saw what Childhood First do, I was blown away! I just wish there was more money to extend IST work to other parts of the country too. I think you all are an amazing bunch of humans for what you do for kids. Keep up all your good work!
